Star Wars Week: Geek Out at the Premiere in Style
This is the second installment of Execulink’s Star Wars week series, which means it’s two days closer to the highly anticipated release of The Force Awakens.
Okay okay, I know it’s exciting, but you’re going to need to calm down if you want to learn how to best show your Star Wars pride during the premiere on Friday! Whether you want to go all-out with your cosplay or just show up with a geeky gadget or two, we’ll let you in on all of the best options and where to buy them.
Let’s start off with a bang – I present to you the coolest of the cool, a little app-controlled BB-8 robot toy. BB-8 is a droid from The Force Awakens, so watch for him on the big screen this weekend! This thing is seriously awesome-looking, as the ball base moves 360 degrees while his head stays put on top. You control him with an app on your phone, and he communicates with you using little beeps and sounds. He’s pretty adorable. Watch this video to see him in action!
You can buy the BB-8 robot on Sphero’s website for $150, which is actually less than I imagined this little guy would go for. This is good news, because now you’re free to spend the money on an extra seat for him if you so choose – I’ve heard droids are huge fans of the franchise.
Next up, we have an iconic weapon from the Star Wars series – yep, you know which one I mean. There are so many models of lightsabers out there; it may be difficult to tell which ones to spend your money on. Here’s a list of geek-approved models that may be a little hard on your wallet, but inarguably good for your soul.
The Kylo Ren Force Fx Deluxe Lightsaber
This lightsaber will be introduced in The Force Awakens, so showing up to the premiere with it will make you look super prepared. You can even buy it at Best Buy stores in Canada, so you can get it in time for Friday!
The Ardent Elite Lightsaber
This lightsaber has a high-end design and is highly customizable. It’s price tag is set at $399.99, so it’s only an accessory for die-hard fans! You can buy it online on the Vader’s Vault website.
The Ultrasabers Graflex Lightsaber
The Graflex lightsaber is nothing short of beautiful, and it’s functional as well – you can duel with it without worrying that it will fall apart, like other display-focused pieces. This is the real deal, so don’t expect to pay less than $400 for it. Check it out on the Ultrasabers website here.
If you’re looking for a more wearable way to show your spirit at the premiere, there’s always the option of Star Wars apparel – and believe me, there’s a TON of it out there.
If you want to go all-out with your cosplay for the premiere, consider dressing up as everyone’s favourite Wookiee in this head-to-toe Chewbacca costume.
Or, if you don’t feel like spending hundreds of dollars, you could tone it back a bit and go with a sweet zip-up hoodie that makes you look like Darth Vader himself. It can be purchased at Sears or Sears.ca, so it should be super easy to get your hands on.
And if you’d like to be subtle about your love for Star Wars while celebrating the holidays at the same time, pick up this Christmas sweater inspired by a galaxy far, far away.
Star Wars Apparel Tip:
Hot Topic is a store with a bunch of great Star Wars accessories, especially for women. There’s one in Fairview mall in Kitchener, so if you’re nearby, drop in to see what they have in stock! If not, you could always order online, and hope that the shipping doesn’t take too long. Here are some of my personal favourite products – just click on the titles and you’ll be linked to the website where you can order them!
Wow. That’s a lot of Star Wars merchandise. And there’s so much more out there! However you choose to show your pride at the premiere on Friday, I hope that you manage to look just as cool as actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (you may know him from 3rd Rock from the Sun, 500 Days of Summer or Looper) when he went to the pre-screening on Monday.
The force is strong with this one.
Stay tuned for the final installment of our Star Wars week blog series on Friday, a.k.a. the day we’ve all been waiting for!

Converse have been my footwear of choice for the past 9 years, I’m convinced that all doors and sidewalks are conspiring against me, and I enjoy sticking my head out of the passenger window on long car rides.
